For the Child A great part of the day of children is spent listening to information and being told to accept it as fact. Because of this situation, the musical instruction of a child often does not require too much explanation so much as it requires a lot of energy and a lot of patience. Children, however, are wonderous creatures: they can surpass your wildest hopes and motivate a teacher to go just one more extra mile. They can certainly be exhausting, but teaching children is a rewarding experience precisely because it keeps instructors young at heart. The children who study piano will have difficulty with finer motor coordination, and more advanced musical concepts that are intellectually esoteric will be difficult for comprehension. But the child who is inspired to love the instrument, to trust themselves, and to above all fall in love with the sound of music will never falter. Through triumphs, through tedious practice, through difficulties, the child who is inspired and engaged on a personal and musical level will have the fortitude to succeed. Not all children will be Rubenstein; that's not the point. The idea is to open their path to the possibility, should they wish to pursue it. My goal as an educator is to tear down any obstruction to a child's potential to develop into whatever they musically want to be. |
